Ever find yourself scrolling through social media, admiring those gorgeous rustic DIY projects, but feeling like they're way too complicated or expensive to try? Yeah, me too. That's why I started experimenting with random stuff I already had at home—cotton swabs, tissue paper, old glass jars—you name it! And surprisingly, I ended up creating some real masterpieces. These projects are simple, budget-friendly, and perfect for upcycling things you already own. Plus, they make beautiful home décor, DIY gifts, and even unique gift toppers.

Today, I'm sharing a project that's easy, beginner-friendly, and requires materials you probably already have on hand.

A few months ago, I was planning a small, intimate dinner party for some friends. I wanted to create a cozy, rustic vibe, but I didn't have the budget to spend a fortune on decorations. That's when my creative instincts kicked in, and I came up with the idea of transforming tissue paper into rustic flowers. I had tissue paper, a jar of instant coffee in my pantry, and a motivation to decorate my dining table with handmade flowers. After just a few minutes of work, I had these earthy-toned flowers that looked like they came straight out of a boutique—but cost me almost nothing to make.

If I can do it, so can you! Follow this easy step-by-step guide to make your own DIY coffee-stained tissue paper flowers. Let's get started!

Required Materials 

  • Small bowl
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
  • 100-150 ml water
  • White paper towels or tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Glass or cup (5-6 cm in diameter)
  • Glue stick

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Coffee-Stained Flowers

1. Prepare the Coffee Stain

Fill your small bowl with 100-150 ml of water.

Add 1 tablespoon of instant coffee granules and stir until fully dissolved. This will create a rich, natural dye for your tissue paper.

2. Cut the Tissue Paper

Cut your paper towels or tissue paper into circles, approximately 2.5-3 inches (6-7.5 cm) in diameter. 

You'll need about 12 to 15 circles per flower.

3. Stain the Tissue Paper

Dip each tissue paper circle into the coffee mixture, ensuring it is fully submerged. 

Let it soak for 5-10 seconds for a light beige tint. For a deeper brown color, leave it in for 15-20 seconds.

Avoid soaking for too long, as the tissue may start to break apart. 

Gently remove the tissue paper and place it on a flat surface to dry. The drying process will give it a wrinkled, vintage texture.

4. Shape the Petals

Once all the circles are dry, use a glass or cup (5-6 cm in diameter) as a mold to shape the petals.

Press each tissue paper circle around the rim of the glass to create a natural curved petal shape.

5. Assemble the Flower

Arrange all the petals around the glass one by one, adding a small dab of glue on each petal before putting the next one. 

Space them about 1-1.5 cm apart with slight overlapping to create a layered, full-bodied flower. 

Once all the petals are in place, carefully flip the glass to release the flower.

6. Let it Dry & Display

Allow the glue to dry completely before displaying your flower.

Tips for Making Perfect Coffee-Stained Flowers

Adjust the Stain: If you want a lighter shade, dilute the stain with more water. You can also use tea instead of coffee for a softer, more subtle stain. For a darker stain, simply add more coffee.

Experiment with Sizes: Try different petal sizes to create smaller or larger flowers.
