How to Make Yarn-Wrapped Heart Décor: Easy DIY Guide

Have you ever found yourself staring at a pile of leftover yarn and wondering what to do with it?

Today, I'm sharing a quick & easy DIY with you: an adorable yarn-wrapped heart décor that doesn't require a trip to the store. Because, we are using that leftover yarn that you already have. It's simple, cute, and easy to make, perfect for adding a little handmade love to your home décor or gifting to your special someone.

So, grab your yarn, and let's make something beautiful together!

Required Materials

Cardboard: Any old cardboard box will do the job, but make sure it's sturdy enough to hold the shape of a heart.

Gold Embroidery Thread: Approximately 12-15 cm (5-6 inches) long for the hanging loop. You can use any color of your liking as well.

Yarn: For a small heart, you'll need approximately 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) of yarn. For a larger heart, yarn of about 3-5 meters (10-16 feet) is required. It will be enough to wrap the entire heart. You can choose any color according to your preference. 

Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: For making and attaching the loop to the heart and securing the yarn. 

Scissors: To cut the cardboard into a heart shape and trim the yarn.

Pencil: For drawing the heart shape.

Step-by-Step Instructions 

Step 1: Cut the Cardboard Heart

Use a pencil to draw a heart on the cardboard. Aim for a height of about 4-6 cm (1.5-2.5 inches) and a width of 5-7 cm (2-2.75 inches). You can use a stencil for a perfect shape or freehand it as well.

Carefully cut along the outline of the heart using scissors. If the cardboard you're using is too thick, you might need to make a few passes to get a clean edge.

Step 2: Create the Hanging Loop

You'll need a piece of gold embroidery thread that is about 12-15 cm (5-6 inches) long for the hanging loop.

Make sure your glue gun is plugged in and warmed up. Use it to place a small dot of glue on the top center of the cardboard heart. Press the thread into the glue while it's still hot, forming a loop at the top. Make sure your loop is large enough to hang comfortably (about 2-3 cm or 1 inch in diameter). Press and hold the thread in place for about 5-10 seconds to ensure the thread bonds securely with the glue.

Step 3: Start Wrapping the Yarn

Take the end of the yarn and start wrapping it around the heart tightly. Begin from the glued section to secure the thread. While wrapping the yarn, make sure it overlaps slightly and is evenly spaced for a neat and polished look. Continue wrapping until the whole cardboard heart is covered in yarn.

Step 4: Secure the Yarn

Once the whole heart is covered in yarn, cut the yarn near the back of the heart. Apply a small dot of hot glue to secure the cut end.

Your Yarn-Wrapped Heart is ready! Hang it on a wall or door, use it as a gift topper, or you can even create a garland by stringing multiple hearts together. It's not only adorable but also incredibly versatile.

Cardboard Warping: If the cardboard heart bends while you're wrapping it, use a thicker cardboard piece or double up the layers for extra sturdiness.
